EXAMPLES OF FUNDED PROJECTS
        (1) A grant was awarded to a university for the preparation of a translation of the Rigveda, an ancient Indian religious text. (2) A grant was made to a college to support a multidisciplinary conference on the Russian author Chekhov. (3) A grant was awarded to a college to support an archaeological investigation at Werewocomoco, an early 17th-century political center of the Powhatan chiefdom in the Tidewater area of Virginia. (4) A grant to a research foundation supported the preparation of an edition of the papers of George Catlett Marshall, Secretary of State under President Truman. (5) A grant to a university supported the preparation of an edition of the papers of George Washington. (6) A grant was made to a university to support preparation of an edition of the operas of Giuseppe Verdi. (7) A grant was made to support research opportunities at an independent research center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. 8) A grant supported a scholarly organization's fellowship program for American scholars conducting research in China.

PROGRAM ACCOMPLISHMENTS
        In fiscal year 2005, 249 applications were received; 54 awards were made.
